Test Name: Reducing Substances, Urine

Description: A qualitative screening test (e.g. Clinitest or Benedict’s reagent) to detect reducing sugars like glucose, galactose, fructose and lactose in urine. Primarily used to screen newborns/children for inborn errors of carbohydrate metabolism (e.g. galactosaemia, hereditary fructose intolerance).

Clinical Use: A positive result suggests metabolic disorders or glycosuria and necessitates confirmatory quantitative testing.

Specimen: Fresh random urine (~2 mL), refrigerated if delayed; test promptly.
